Castlemaine VIC

Everybody loves a weekend away. Especially when it’s only a 90 minutes drive from Melbourne. We visited Castlemaine in September 2019 and returned 4 weeks later to explore some more. Castlemaine is known for its rich gold rush history, creative residents, local eateries and impressive botanical gardens.

After exploring the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens we continued with an easy, flat walk into town. In and around Castlemaine we found many quirky characters and places. A steam train departing set the mood for exploring this historic town with its wide streets, grand town buildings and century old speciality shops.

We also discovered an interesting walking track beginning at Expedition Pass Reservoir on Golden Point Road just out from Chewton. Check it out here Castlemaine VIC – walk

There are many other walks and bike trails in and around Castlemaine. I found the following site useful https://www.bendigoregion.com.au/visit-castlemaine-maldon/cycling-bushwalking

Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park is set in a peaceful location adjacent to the charming botanical gardens. Staff here were friendly and the amenities were very clean. The view from our caravan site was the highlight. Overlooking the gardens with a glass of wine in one hand and local cheese & biscuits in the other was a pleasant way to end the day.🥂
