Fremantle (WA)

Fremantle is situated at the mouth of the Swan River just south of Perth and with its streets full of history and restored buildings makes for a charming place to walk or ride around. After checking in to the Fremantle Village Caravan Park we walked about a kilometre to Fremantle’s South Beach to watch the sun go down over the harbour.

We stepped inside to do some time in the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison. The Behind Bars Tour gave a fascinating insight to prison life for men and women, from 1850 right through to 1991 when it was finally decommissioned.

The Round House was the first permanent building in what was then known as the Swan River Colony. It opened as a prison in 1831 and the sites prominence and design were chosen to emphasise law and order. Many of it’s features intended to physically and psychologically dominate the community.

The wreck of the Batavia has been restored and is on display at the WA Shipwrecks Museum. The Batavia shipwreck is one of the most brutal and bizarre stories in Australians European history. More information can be found on this gruesome story here http://museum.wa.gov.au/research/research-areas/maritime-archaeology/batavia-cape-inscription/batavia As WA’s coastline is quite treacherous many other notable exhibitions are also on display at the Shipwrecks Museum.

Fremantle is home to many iconic destinations. First we visited the Fremantle Markets, with its eclectic mix of locals and tourists. Then we went to the Fishing Boat Harbour, surrounded by cafes cooking a feast of seafood and lastly the Esplanade, with plenty of shade for warmer days.😎

We ventured over to Rottnest island by ferry and opted for a guided bus tour to see the island. To be quite honest we were a little disappointed as the island was overcrowded with people and bikes and many of the main attractions were inaccessible due to maintenance. As a tourist attraction, Rottnest is overly advertised so perhaps it was just a case of the hype not meeting our expectations.🤷‍♀️

However the Rottnest Island Quokkas did keep us (or perhaps just me😁) entertained as they are fun to watch and photograph. Do not be fooled by the ‘butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth’ face because a quokka will sacrifice their babies, by dropping them, to escape predators. Holy quokkamole!😮
