Carnarvon thrived in the sixties and seventies. Successful businesses, popped up everywhere including hotels, shops, tourist attractions and amusement parks. Then, during the eighties crash everyone seemed to leave Carnarvon, and the tourists stopped coming. Many of the businesses that closed down were simply boarded up and remain that way today. We rode our bikes out to the jetty that was also boarded up after being damaged in a cyclone.🤷♀️

Somehow the rundown state of this town grows on you and after a while you see the place in a whole new light. The tourist attractions that have remained feel like you stepped back to a simpler time. A great example is the Carnarvon Space & Technology Museum which was the site of the Satellite Earth Station used by NASA. Buzz Aldrin, the 2nd man on the moon, opened the Museum in 2012. I truly hope the following photos show how much fun we had as it’s a ‘must see’ if you ever visit here.👍

We decided to drive to the Blowholes and guess what? We couldn’t access the boardwalk as it was also being repaired.🥴 However we still managed to see some wonderful sprays and had our photo taken at the iconic King Waves Kill sign.
We also drove out to Rocky Pool and explored the Gascoyne River. Sometimes you have to wait for cattle crossing the road as stations are too large to fence.😊

Carnarvon has many Instagram worthy hotspots and none more famous that the Cactus Garden. No-one could tell us why it’s so famous but the Visitor Centre told us it’s a must do – so we did. 🤷♀️😆
Carnarvon is surrounded by banana plantations and the frozen chocolate coated bananas produced here are delicious.😋

Mmmm😋

It was suggested to us by another traveler to stay in Carnarvon for at least a week and to stay at the Wintersun Caravan Park. Obviously, so we could experience all that the park had to offer (checkout the menu below). Woohoo!🥂
