Geraldton (WA)

We weren’t sure what to expect from Geraldton as many travellers don’t include it in their itinerary. Fortunately for us we loved it. How can you not love a town with a BIG Marble?

Geraldton is big old fashion country town with a mediterranean climate. We rode along the foreshore and ended at the Esplanade overlooking the Midwest Port Authority. There’s a great interactive youth precinct here that includes a rage cage, climbing boards, free wifi and cafes.

The HMAS Sydney II Memorial was built to honour the 645 Australian soldiers who lost their lives in battle just off the WA coast. This memorial is very moving especially the statue of the waiting woman, frozen in time, looking out to the sea. She looks real, you can see and feel the pain as she waits for lost love ones who will never return.

The Shipwrecks Gallery at the Museum of Geraldton is very well done with information on 4 of the 52 shipwrecks recorded off the WA coast. The HMAS Sydney II and HSK Kormoran WW2 battle is also well documented with a 3D film.

We stayed at the Sunset Beach Caravan Park and surprise surprise the sunsets here were stunning especially with the ships lined up on the horizon. Unfortunately the beach was not as stunning if you wanted a swim due to washed up seaweed.
